AND THE WINNER IS….

(drumroll please)

LEVAIN BAKERY!!!!!!!

There you have it, folks. Levain makes the best chocolate chip cookie in Manhattan. It’s huge, delicious, chocolatey, mushy, walnuty, savory, AMAZING. Family and friends who have tried one agree! Above is the box I brought home to the fam as promised. However, five Levain cookies is more than enough for five people, so there are still some in the freezer waiting to be microwaved at a later date. Maybe if my friends are lucky I’ll bring them up to school tomorrow…

The NYC tour is over but that doesn’t mean I won’t be posting more cookie pics! Did you really think I was going to quit here? Check back in once in awhile for more Tookie cookies and treats. Knowing my sweet tooth, there will be plenty more!

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!

As sad as it is that this summer is over and I never want to stop eating Manhattan’s best cookies, I am truly excited to reveal the winner of the Tookie Cookie Tour of Summer 2011. But first:

THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who recommended I try various bakeries, accompanied me on bakery stops, gave me their opinions on cookies, brought me cookies, finished cookies I didn’t want to finish, encouraged my cookie adventures, and read this ridiculous blog. Apparently it has one view on Stumble Upon…that’s one step closer to cookie fame! But seriously, thanks everyone!!!

8/10/11 - RUTHY’S BAKERY & CAFE

I was really dumb and forgot to take a picture of Ruthy’s cookie. So close to the end! I was doing so well! I guess I was just too hungry and a little overeager… (see: this entire blog)

Since you’re not getting a visual with this post, I will tell you that Ruthy’s cookie was a little smaller than Amy’s, and it was very plain-looking. Most of its chocolate chips weren’t even visible from the outside. Its thick and chewy dough gave it the texture of a hearty oatmeal cookie, yet it tasted very bland in comparison to most cookies I’ve tried this summer. I was slightly disappointed until I realized that what Ruthy’s cookie lacked in dough flavor, it made up with in chocolate chips. Those chips were SO GOOD!! Amazingly chocolatey! Unfortunately the cookie did not contain enough of them. That ever so important dough-to-chip ratio was way off. Such a shame. Overall I was not super impressed, but that’s okay, because rumor has it that Ruthy’s makes the best cheesecake in NYC…just sayin.

8/10/11 - AMY’S BREAD
Have you figured out yet that Chelsea Market is the place to go for all things incredibly delicious? This cookie’s dough was soft and chewy but still substantial, and it was ideally sweet without being over-the-top. Not to mention it also had the perfect dough-to-chip ratio (it’s all about the ratio). Its random salty spots added a slight flavor twist that I welcomed much more than the salt overload in City Bakery’s pretzel-licorice cookie. Another amazing flavor twist: hazelnut/almond-y spots! There were times when I could have sworn I was tasting bits of Ferrero-Rocher chocolates. YUM!!! Overall, I was quite impressed with Amy’s Bread’s chocolate chip cookie.

8/4/11 - BOUCHON BAKERY
Okay, so this is clearly not a traditional chocolate chip cookie. I had a sad experience making a special trip to Columbus Circle for Bouchon, only to be told that they were out of chocolate chip cookies. WHAT?! Are you kidding me?? What kind of bakery runs out of chocolate chip cookies? And shouldn’t they be making more? I was very confused and disappointed, but I figured since I had come all the way there, I had to get something. I opted for the double chocolate chip cookie. It can’t and shouldn’t count in the running for the best chocolate chip cookie in Manhattan, but it still deserves a spot on the Tookie Cookie Tour blog.
Do not let the name “cookie” fool you in this case. With its overwhelming size and soft, moist texture, it was very much like a huge brownie. There’s no way anyone, not even a cookie fanatic like myself, could finish this entire cookie/brownie thing in one sitting. Based on this chocolatey masterpiece, you can tell Bouchon makes a mean chocolate chip cookie. It’s a shame I couldn’t try it! At least now I know of a place I still need to try next time I’m in the city…but I will be sure to call ahead!

8/4/11 - SARABETH’S BAKERY
Wow! Another shop in Chelsea Market that serves delicious cookies. For a very plain-looking cookie, it certainly packs a punch. The dough is a perfect blend of sweet and thick, and the flavor emerges as you chew it more and move farther into the middle of the cookie. Despite its satisfying flavor, it won’t leave you with the feeling that you just ate a ton. Eating a Sarabeth’s cookie is an enjoyable experience from start to finish, with its strong flavor and very chocolatey chips. The perfect snack if you’re going to break the no-dessert-before-dinner rule.
